27 Arisaig

27) Arisaig - June 1999.
This year we were based near Mallaig, and I found this place just by going on a driving reccy. Geoff was due to arrive the next day, and as its always nice to have 'local' slope I decided to go out exploring the local coastline. I started at Mallaig, and worked my way down along the main road, taking every possible right turn that looked like it led to an accessible cliff edge, and exploring the road as far as I could.
I had had three or four false trails when I found a small single track road that wound its way all along the coastline which was surrounded by several potential hills. Eventually right at the end of the track, I came across this little outcrop. It does look a little rocky, but there are actually some very good landing spots up there. I went up and had a few hours flying and checking out the slopes.

The next day I took Geoff directly there, and as usual we were not short of good lift.
(28) Here Geoff's Sitar Special does a low pass. Look at that slope on Eigg in the background.

Coastal Gliding

You can see the island again as I make a slow pass with E-SR in the Coastal mpeg Gliding 132kb MPG file, no sound, 4 secs duration - optimized for the web.

We visited this slope several times during our stay in this area. It was good for a few directions, but finding a good landing area involved a bit of searching. As each day passed, confidence grew and it was no time at until we started having fun.

Down The Pipe 555 - Arisaig 1999
The top of this slope had various folds in it where the ground would drop by about ten or fifteen feet forming small valleys about 15 to 20 feet across. The game then was to gain height, fly downwind, and dive, dive, dive for a high speed pass through the gulley.

Glid15b Gliding

Here's a clip.... Geoff and the Jibba Jabba. Nice shot of Arisaig in the distance as he flies out of the pipe.

and then Me taking ESR on a low pass through the pipe. Sorry Geoff!

The movie clips here are all taken on the other side of the slope you can see in the still photo. However we did actually slope soar the edge you can see in the photo which was taken from the carpark at the foot of the hill. Also great fun, some good Pipe 555 features on this side of the slope too. On the last day we x-countried down the slope. Right at the last moment I walked behind a mound and lost sight of the Sunprobe. The last sight I had of it I was thermal turning quite near the slope edge, and I was about to start making the flight out towards myself stood near the foot of the hill. Too late, it disappeared over the top of the hill. Geoff kindly packed up all the kit and I set off back up the slope. Its funny the things that go through your head when you search for a lost model. You set off quite confident of finding the model, but It seems to take ages searching, and every second that goes by you become more and more sure that you are wasting your time....and then suddenly there it is. Good old Sunprobe was undamaged! So I indicated to Geoff that I was going to launch her. He got my tx out and flew her back to the car. By the time I had got back down the slope he had put her in the car, another memorable trip to Scotland at an end.
